A surfactant that increases the ability of a solid surface to wet. Wetting occurs when a liquid adheres to a solid. When the surface of an object has a capillary structure or is covered with a water-repellent material, water does not penetrate or wet easily, but adding a substance that significantly reduces the surface tension of water makes these objects more likely to wet. Among surfactants, those that greatly reduce the surface tension of water in this way are called wetting agents (penetrating wetting agents). Aerosol OT, Nekal BX, and Lissapol N are typical examples. They are used in textiles, medicine, pesticides, food, cleaning agents, emulsifiers, dispersants, etc. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
