…The Church of England movement was started in the first half of the 19th century by clerical theologians of the Church of England associated with Oxford University. At the time, the Church of England was in a state of crisis due to the laxity of discipline, the influence of theological liberalism, and the growing power of the Catholic Church. John Keble's (1792-1866) Oxford sermon entitled "National Apostasy" (14 July 1833) sparked a movement to reform and reconstruct the Church of England in accordance with the high church ideals of the 17th century Anglican theologians. The central leaders of this movement were Keble, J. H. Newman, and Edward B. Pusey (1800-82), and it was promoted by a literary activity called "Tracts for the Times" (initiated by Newman in 1833). …

However, the Oxford Movement of John Keble, Edward Bouverie Pusey, and JH Newman reinvigorated the High Churchmen, and they have remained a major force in the Anglican Church ever since. The more Catholic position among the High Churchmen was called Anglo-Catholicism, and it was harshly criticized by the Low Churchmen for denying the contributions of the 16th century Reformers and largely reviving Catholic practices in worship and religious life. …
