Wooden Buddha sculptor
〘 noun 〙 (as opposed to an ebusshi, who specializes in creating Buddhist paintings) A person who was engaged in the creation of wooden Buddhist statues. They have existed as specialized craftsmen since the Heian period, and flourished in the Kamakura period. ※Tenryaku - November 16, 1102 (Kōwa 4) "In the year of the rooster, wooden Buddhist sculptors make things loud and difficult, which is extremely inconvenient."
