Darnel (Poisonous Barley) - Darnel (Poisonous Barley)
An annual grass of the grass family. It is an introduced plant native to Europe and has spread to farmland throughout Japan. It grows to a height of 50-150 cm and has rough-surfaced leaves. It produces long ears in May, with spikelets arranged somewhat sparsely and alternating from left to right. The caryopsis is poisonous, and this poison is sometimes used medicinally to numb pain from rheumatism and other conditions.

イネ科の一年草。ヨーロッパ原産の帰化植物で日本各地の畑地に広まった。高さ 50~150cmにもなり,表面のざらついた葉をつける。5月頃に長い穂を出し,小穂はややまばらに左右に交互に並ぶ。穎果に毒があるが,この毒をリウマチなどの痛みを麻痺させるために薬用に使う場合がある。
