Kano Domain

Japanese:
Kano Domain
A small to medium-sized fudai domain with its headquarters in Kano, Mino Province (present-day Gifu City). It began in 1601 when Tokugawa Ieyasu's son-in-law, Okudaira Nobumasa, was granted a fief of 100,000 koku. After the Okudaira clan died out, Okubo Tadamoto entered the domain from Kisai, Musashi Province in 1632, and in 1639, the Toda clan from Akashi, Harima Province, entered the domain with a fief of 70,000 koku, replacing the Okubo clan. In 1711, the Toda clan was transferred to Yodo, Yamashiro Province, and Ando Nobutomo entered the domain from Matsuyama, Bitchu Province with a fief of 65,000 koku. During the reign of the second lord, Nobutada, a turmoil occurred within the family and 15,000 koku was confiscated, and the following year the Ando clan was transferred to Iwakidaira, Mutsu Province. The Nagai clan, who came from Iwatsuki in Musashi Province, replaced him and came into possession of 23,000 koku of land in the Kano area, as well as 9,000 koku in Settsu and Kawachi provinces, which led to the abolition of the feudal domains and the establishment of prefectures. In the mid-18th century, there were numerous lawsuits demanding a reduction in the annual tax owed to the domain's citizens, which was an indirect cause of the outbreak of turmoil within the domain. At the end of the Edo period, the domain monopolized umbrellas and skeins, encouraging their production and controlling their distribution. The domain school was the Kenshokan (later renamed the Bunbukan).
