Japanese: ハジラミ(羽蝨∥羽虱) - ハジラミ（英語表記）chewing louse

A general term for parasitic insects belonging to the order Mallophaga. They are broadly divided into long-horned and short-horned lice based on the length of their antennae. They are also called trichophagous. They live in bird feathers and animal fur, and are small and flat, with degenerate eyes and no wings. Adults are 0.5-10 mm long, with males being slightly smaller than females. Body color varies by species, from white, yellow, brown, to black. Most are external parasites of birds, parasitizing all bird orders, and some also parasitize mammals. About 2,800 species are known worldwide, of which 250 have been recorded from Japan.

ハジラミ目Mallophagaに属する寄生昆虫の総称。触角の長さで長角ハジラミと短角ハジラミに大別する。食毛類とも呼ぶ。鳥の羽毛や獣の体毛の中で生活し，小型で扁平，眼は退化し翅はない。成虫の体長は0.5～10mmで雄は雌より少し小さい。体色は白色，黄色，褐色，黒色と種によってさまざまである。大部分が鳥類の外部寄生虫で鳥類のすべての目（もく）に寄生し，一部は哺乳類にも寄生する。全世界で2800種ほどが知られ，うち250種が日本から記録されている。
