A cone-shaped tent used as a dwelling by the Plains Indians of North America. Also spelled tepee. The Great Plains is a vast area stretching from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains, where many tribes, including the Blackfoot, lived, but they all shared the common practice of hunting in groups by following herds of bison. A tipi is made with three or four pine or fir trees as its axis, with additional wood added to create a cone-shaped frame. A weight is lowered from the top to secure the frame. Bison hide is wrapped around the frame and secured with pins. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
