This refers to the villa that the third shogun, Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, had in Kitayama, Kyoto during the Muromachi period, and hence the name Yoshimitsu himself. There was a villa here built by Saionji Kintsune in 1224, but Yoshimitsu inherited it from Saionji Sanenaga and completed it in 1397 at a construction cost of over 100 kan. Emperor Gokomatsu visited the site in 1397. The Kinkakuji Temple is a relic from that time. At the time, it contained the Shariden Hall, Tenkyokaku, Goma Hall, and Penitential Hall, and stood out with its vast garden.
