[Assimilation through seeing]
But how does assimilation through seeing occur? The German theater scholar Arthur Kutscher's (1878-1960) theory of "mimik" (Essays in Dramatic Theory) offers one key to this point. In other words, actors and audiences essentially have the same gestural experience, and actors psychologically perform "mimik as visible acting," while audiences perform "mimik as invisible acting."

From [Theatre Studies]

...This lineage of theater history research has produced the 10-volume work "History of European Theater" (1957-74) by Heinz Kindermann (1894-), founder of the Institute for Theater Studies at the University of Vienna. On the other hand, we cannot forget Arthur Kutscher (1878-1960), who taught theater at the University of Munich for many years. He left theater history behind and instead placed emphasis on the performance of actors, arguing sharply that the main subject of theater studies is gestures, the original means of expression in theater.
