Chuxiong - That

A county in central Yunnan, China, located in the upper reaches of the Longchuan River, a small tributary of the Jinsha River that runs southward. The center of the Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture. Located halfway between the western and eastern parts of the Yunnan Plateau, it is a strategic transportation hub that connects to the Dianchi Basin, where the provincial capital Kunming is located, to the east, to Dali to the west, to Sichuan via the Jinsha River basin to the north, and to Vietnam via the Red River basin to the south. As it is in a small basin on the plateau, it is blessed with stable productivity, and a central settlement developed early on. There are salt wells nearby, and it was also a distribution center for rock salt. Originally a settlement of the southwestern foreign tribes called the Can, it became more active in the Northern and Southern Dynasties period, and the Han people began to advance into the area.

中国，雲南省中部，金沙江より南へのびる小支流，竜川江の上流にある県。楚雄イ(彝)族自治州の中心。雲南高原の西部と東部の中間に位置し，東は省都昆明のある滇池（てんち）盆地に，西は大理に，北へは金沙江流域より四川へ，南へは紅河流域よりベトナムへ通じる交通上の要衝にあることと，高原上の小盆地にあって安定した生産力にも恵まれ，早くから中心集落が発達した。付近に塩井もあって，岩塩の集散地でもあった。もともとは爨（そう）と呼ばれた西南異民族の居住地であったが，南北朝時代には中央との交流も盛んになり，漢民族の進出も始まっていた。
