Generally used in the same sense as forest, but sometimes limited to mountain forests and excluding flatland forests. A state in which tall trees grow in clusters, with the crowns (crowns) of the trees standing side by side forming a layer called a canopy (this state is called closed or closed). There are various ways to classify forests, and from the viewpoint of ownership they are classified as national forests and private forests (public forests, private forests), from the viewpoint of afforestation they are classified as artificial forests and natural forests (primeval forests, naturally regenerated forests), from the viewpoint of tree species they are classified as coniferous forests and broadleaf forests, and from the viewpoint of use they are classified as economic forests (→ timber forests, firewood forests) for the use of forest products (especially lumber production), scenic forests for public functions, and disaster prevention forests (coastal windbreaks, watershed conservation forests, avalanche prevention forests, etc.). The total forest area of Japan is about 25,212,000 hectares, with 31% being national forests, 11% being public forests, and 58% being private forests. Natural forests account for 54%, planted forests for 41% (1990), and others for 5%.
