A political party in Okinawa. Abbreviated as Shadaito. Founded in October 1950 in Okinawa, under the US military occupation after World War II. With the general working class as its support base, the party advocated the implementation of democratic social policies as its platform. In the 1960s, it promoted the movement as a central figure in the Okinawa Prefecture Homeland Reversion Council (Reversion Council), a unified organization of the movement for reversion to the mainland (→Reversion of Okinawa). After the reversion in 1972, there was a period of uncertainty over the party's survival, but it consolidated its position by getting its chairman, Koichi Taira, elected as governor of Okinawa Prefecture. As of 2013, the party has only one member of the Diet, Senator Keiko Itokazu, but it is a unique presence as a local political party.
