After serving as a lawyer and member of the House of Commons, he became Attorney General in 1533, and convicted More and J. Fisher through vile fabricated evidence and false testimony. Speaker of the House of Commons in 1536. He assisted T. Cromwell in carrying out the Dissolution of the Monasteries, but when Cromwell fell out of favor, he abandoned him and tried to save himself, becoming a Privy Councillor in 1540, a Baron in 1547, and Lord Chancellor from 1548 to 1551. During this time, he sided with the Duke of Northumberland and assisted in the downfall of the Duke of Somerset (1551). After the death of Edward VI in 1553, he supported J. Grey, but when the situation became unfavorable, he immediately switched to supporting Mary I, and during her reign he devoted himself to persecuting Protestants. rich |
