Rich, Richard, 1st Baron Rich
Born: Around 1496, London
[Died] June 12, 1567. Rochford, Essex. English lawyer and politician. Notorious for being an unscrupulous careerist who framed T. More. After serving as a lawyer and member of the House of Commons, he became Attorney General in 1533, and convicted More and J. Fisher through vile fabricated evidence and false testimony. Speaker of the House of Commons in 1536. He assisted T. Cromwell in carrying out the Dissolution of the Monasteries, but when Cromwell fell out of favor, he abandoned him and tried to save himself, becoming a Privy Councillor in 1540, a Baron in 1547, and Lord Chancellor from 1548 to 1551. During this time, he sided with the Duke of Northumberland and assisted in the downfall of the Duke of Somerset (1551). After the death of Edward VI in 1553, he supported J. Grey, but when the situation became unfavorable, he immediately switched to supporting Mary I, and during her reign he devoted himself to persecuting Protestants.

Ricci, Sebastiano

Born: August 1, 1659 in Belluno
Died: May 15, 1734. Venetian Italian painter. Trained in Bologna, Rome, and Florence, and studied under Alessandro Magnasco in Milan. He was active in Venice and other Italian cities, as well as Vienna, London, and Paris. Influenced by Paolo Veronese, he established a style that combined Venetian Baroque tradition with clear colors, and was a forerunner of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. Many of his works are frescoes, altarpieces, and mythological subjects. His nephew Marco was also a painter. His main work is the mural on the façade of St. Mark's Basilica, "Adoration to St. Mark."

Rich, John

[Died] November 26, 1761. London. British theater owner and actor. Son of Christopher Rich (?-1714), owner of Drury Lane and Lincoln's Inn Fields theaters. After his father's death, he managed both theaters, and in 1732 opened the Covent Garden Theater. He also popularized pantomime, which had been introduced from France, and performed Harlequin himself, earning him the title of the father of British pantomime.

[Died] November 10, 1617, Dublin. British soldier and writer. He published a large number of pamphlets and collections of stories in a style similar to that of J. Lyly. Among his most famous works is Riche his Farewell to the Militarie Profession (1581), a collection of tales including "Apollonius and Silla," which provided material for Shakespeare's Twelfth Night.

イタリアの画家。ボローニャ,ローマ,フィレンツェで修業し,ミラノでアレッサンドロ・マニャスコに師事。ベネチアを中心にイタリア諸都市のほか,ウィーン,ロンドン,パリでも活躍した。パオロ・ベロネーゼの影響を受け,ベネチアのバロック的伝統と明快な色彩を結びつけた作風を確立し,ジョバンニ・バティスタ・ティエポロの先駆をなした。フレスコ画,祭壇画,神話に取材した作品が多い。甥のマルコも画家。主要作品はサン・マルコ大聖堂のファサード(正面)の壁画『サン・マルコへの尊敬』。

イギリスの劇場経営者,俳優。ドルアリー・レーン劇場とリンカーンズ・イン・フィールド劇場の経営者クリストファー・リッチ (?~1714) の子。父の没後両劇場を経営,さらに 1732年にはコベントガーデン劇場を開設した。また,フランスから入ってきたパントマイムを普及させ,みずからハーレクィンを演じ,イギリスのパントマイムの父と称された。
