Bedouin - Bedouin (English spelling)

They are Arab nomads who live in the desert and semi-desert areas of the Arabian Peninsula, the Middle East, and North Africa. However, the word Bedouin is not an accurate Arabic word. It is said that the word originated from the Arabic collective noun "badu" (singular feminine form is "badawiya") or the colloquial plural "badaween" (badawīn) which was pronounced with a rough accent by Europeans.

It is proven by various historical sources that Bedouin and Arab were originally synonymous. In an Assyrian inscription around 853 BC, where the word Arab first appeared, it referred to the Bedouin living in the northern part of the Arabian Peninsula. The word "Arab" that appears in ancient inscriptions in southern Arabia and in the Quran also refers to the Bedouin.

The Arabic word Badu means people who live in Badiya (desert wilderness, not a town), and it doesn't matter if they are mobile, settled, or settled temporarily. Therefore, translating Bedouin as "nomads" is not correct, although it is not a mistranslation. The opposite of Badu is Hadari (people who live in towns). However, most Hadari were originally Badu, and there is a continuity and reversibility between the two.

In general, social organizations, from clans and tribes to extended families, have a patrilineal segmental structure, with the extended family being the most important unit.

The Bedouin's traditional livelihood is nomadic camel herding, but in recent years their life deep in the desert has been buffeted by the waves of the commodity economy, with trucks and other vehicles gradually replacing camels, and the Bedouin's lifestyle is also changing.

On the other hand, Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries are implementing policies to encourage the Bedouin to settle in the country, and the absolute number of Bedouins is currently decreasing rapidly.

アラビア半島を中心に、中近東、北アフリカの砂漠・半砂漠一帯に住むアラブ系遊牧民。ただしベドウィンということばは、正確なアラビア語ではない。バダウィ（単数女性形はバダウィヤ）の集合名詞バドゥまたは口語複数形バダウィーンというアラビア語を、ヨーロッパ人が訛(なま)って発音したのが始まりだといわれている。

　ベドウィンとアラブが、元来、同義語であったことは、さまざまな史料から証明されている。アラブということばが最初に現れた紀元前853年ごろのアッシリアの碑文では、それはアラビア半島北部に住むベドウィンのことであった。南アラビアの古代碑文やコーランに出てくる「アラブ」もベドウィンのことをさしている。

　アラビア語のバドゥは、バーディヤ（砂漠性の荒野、町ではない所）に住む人たちという意味であり、彼らが移動しているか、定住しているか、あるいは一時的に定住しているかは問題ではない。したがって、ベドウィンを「遊牧民」と訳すのは誤訳とはいえないまでも正しい訳ではない。バドゥに対することばとしてハダリ（町に住む人たち）がある。しかしハダリも、もとはバドゥだった者がほとんどであり、両者の間には連続性、可逆性がみられる。

　一般に社会組織は、氏族、部族から拡大家族に至るまで、父系の分節構造をもち、なかでももっとも重要な単位は拡大家族である。

　ラクダを中心とした遊牧がベドウィンの伝統的な生業形態であるが、砂漠の奥に住む彼らの生活も、近年は商品経済の波に洗われ、トラックなどがラクダにとってかわりつつあり、ベドウィンの生活も変容してきている。

　一方、サウジアラビアをはじめ、どのアラブ諸国でもベドウィン定着化の政策がとられており、ベドウィンの絶対数は急速に減少してきているのが現状である。
