Italian composer. He served Cardinal Luigi d'Este and others in Rome, and was invited to the courts of Ferrara, Mantua, Florence, and other cities, and rarely left Italy during his life. Along with Gesualdo and Monteverdi, he is one of the greatest composers of late madrigals (polyphonic songs), and his many madrigals for four, five, and six voices are based on well-balanced polyphonic writing and show a noble and elegant character. He also wrote many secular vocal pieces for three voices, villanelle (meaning "country song"), and left behind several works in the fields of religious madrigals and motets.
