French painter. He studied drawing in his hometown of Saint-Quentin, then entered the architecture department of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, but switched to painting, aiming for a purer, non-subjective world on the periphery of Cubism. He published the magazine Élan from 1915 to 1917, where he established the theoretical foundations of his Purism. In 1917 he met Jeanneret (later Le Corbusier), and the following year they proclaimed Purism in their joint work After Cubism. From 1920 to 1925 he published the magazine Esprit Nouveau with Jeanneret, and produced works that could be described as a stricter version of synthetic Cubism. He lived in London from 1935, and in New York from 1938, where he founded the École des Beaux-Arts Ozenfant. He returned to Japan after the Second World War and died in Paris.
