A city in northeastern Ohio, United States. It is located about 100 km south-southeast of Cleveland. Founded in 1805, it developed rapidly between 1900 and 1920, accepting immigrants from Europe and Africa. It is the number one producer of alloy steel made in electric furnaces in the United States, and is also important in the manufacture of bearings and bolts, as well as in the ceramics industry. It is home to the Stark Branch of Kent State University, the Friends (Quakers) Malone University, and the grave of the 25th President, William McKinley. It is the birthplace of the American Football League, the NFL, and is home to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Population 80,806 (2000).
