Abbreviation: Lep. A small southern constellation. Located south of Orion, it was thought to have been a hunting prey for the giant Orion. Its alpha star, Arneb, has an apparent magnitude of 2.6, a spectral type of F0, and is about 400 light years away. Arneb comes from the Arabic al-Arnab (meaning rabbit). R Lepus is a long-period variable star with a period of about 432 days, and contains the globular cluster M79. Its approximate position is right ascension 5h25m, declination -20°. It reaches its highest point in the sky at 8pm in early February. [Ishida Goro]
