"Ippen Hijirie" - Ippen Hijirie

…There are various relics, but they can be broadly divided into two categories. First, the 12 volumes of the Ippen Hijirie (owned by Kankikoji Temple, although the 7th volume is in the Tokyo National Museum) are painted on silk, which is unusual for a picture scroll, and the colophon of the 12th volume states that in August 1299, Shokai wrote the legend, Hogen En'i drew the pictures, and Fujiwara Tsunetada wrote the title. This so-called Shokaibon was produced 10 years after Ippen's death, by Shokai, who was both a close relative and a senior disciple of Ippen, and En'i, who was also thought to have been close to Ippen, who led several artists in their efforts to repay their debt of gratitude and virtue. …

[Late paintings]
Looking at society in general in the second half of the 13th century, the Mongol invasion triggered the movement of people from Gyeonggi to the eastern provinces, reaching even the westernmost parts of the country, and the broadening of their horizons is thought to have influenced art and crafts as well. Many of the major surviving picture scrolls were produced during this period, including Buddhist scripture tales such as the Kegon Gojugosho Emaki (Todaiji Temple), narrative paintings such as the Murasaki Shikibu Diary Emaki (Gotoh Museum of Art, etc.), and battle paintings such as the Mongol Invasion Illustrated Scroll (Gyotō Museum of Art, etc.). In particular, paintings depicting the origins of shrines and temples such as Kitano Tenmangū Shrine, and paintings depicting the lives of high priests, such as the Ippen Hijiri-e (Ippen Hijiri-e) produced in 1299 (Shoan 1) (by En'isaku, Kankikō-ji Temple, Kyoto, etc.) were very popular.
