Japanese: 関東申次 - かんとうもうしつぎ

When the shogunate was established in Kamakura at the end of the 12th century, a position for liaison and negotiation with the shogunate was naturally created in the Imperial Court in Kyoto. This position and the person who filled it came to be called Kanto Shintsugi from the mid-13th century onwards. The type of person who filled the position and the activities they performed depended on the political balance of power between the Imperial Court and the shogunate at the time. For example, during the time of Minamoto no Yoritomo, Yoshida Tsunefusa, who was the In's denso, was solely responsible for acting as an intermediary between the Imperial Court and the shogunate, but after the Jokyu War, Kujo Michiie, the father of Shogun Yoritsune, negotiated important matters, and the Innosuke handled minor matters.

12世紀の末に鎌倉に幕府が開かれると，京都の朝廷には幕府との連絡交渉にあたる役職がおのずから生まれてきた。この役職およびその任にあたる人物は，13世紀半ば以降関東申次と呼ばれるようになった。いかなる人物がその任にあたり，いかなる活動を示すかは，その時々の朝廷と幕府との政治的な力関係によって左右された。たとえば源頼朝の時代には，もっぱら院伝奏の吉田経房が朝幕間の単なる取次ぎにあたり，承久の乱後は，重要事項については将軍頼経の父である九条道家が交渉にあたり，小事は院司が取り次ぐといったぐあいであった。
