…In place of the “pub culture,” the middle class, or bourgeoisie, tried to force workers to have what might be called “rational entertainment,” a “wholesome entertainment” that avoided alcohol and gambling, but the latter was not easily accepted by workers, and how to spend leisure time became an important aspect of the class struggle in the 19th century. Pubs, which were originally just an enlarged version of a room in an ordinary home, became larger and more luxurious in both interior and exterior, using a lot of glass, and became independent buildings that were called “gin palaces” in the 1830s. From this time on, the interior was partitioned and divided into pubs and saloons (seats for somewhat more elite customers, where the same alcoholic beverages were sold at a slightly higher price). However, in big cities such as London, there are now many pubs that do not make this distinction. …
