…The palace's official residence, the Hanlin Academy, was abbreviated to Hanlin Academy or Gakushi-in, and its elegant name was Hanyuan. Hanlin scholars were initially called Hanlin Taizheng along with other specialists in calligraphy, painting, medicine, divination, and other fields, but in the 26th year of the Kaiyuan era under Emperor Xuanzong (738), they became independent and came to be called Gakushi. Since literary scholars drafted imperial edicts and also participated in political consultations, the emperor also took care to select them, and appointed notable people from around the country, so they naturally came to be respected by both superiors and subordinates. …
