…The palace's official residence, the Hanlin Academy, was abbreviated to Hanlin Academy or Gakushi-in, and its elegant name was Hanyuan. Hanlin scholars were initially called Hanlin Taizheng along with other specialists in calligraphy, painting, medicine, divination, and other fields, but in the 26th year of the Kaiyuan era under Emperor Xuanzong (738), they became independent and came to be called Gakushi. Since literary scholars drafted imperial edicts and also participated in political consultations, the emperor also took care to select them, and appointed notable people from around the country, so they naturally came to be respected by both superiors and subordinates. …

…その宮中における出仕の館，翰林学士院は略して翰林院，また学士院と称せられ，雅名を翰苑という。翰林学士は初め，書画医卜などの専門家と共に宮中に召され，翰林待詔と呼ばれたが，玄宗の開元26年(738)独立して学士と称せられるようになった。文学の士は天子の詔勅を起草すると同時に，政治上の諮問にあずかるので，天子もまたその選任に意を用い，天下の名士を登用し，自然に上下の尊崇を受けるようになったからである。…
