Palaeoloxodon antiguus

...A genus of the proboscidea family Elephantidae. A group of fossil elephants, named in 1924 by Matsumoto Hikoshichiro, combining the Greek words for ancient (palaios), curved or distorted (loxos), and tooth (odontos). The type species is the Indian P. namadicus . Incidentally, the genus name for African elephants is Loxodonta . In addition to the N. namadicus, other species include the European P. antiquus , the dwarf P. falconerii and the Maltese P. meltensis from the Mediterranean region, and the Japanese Naumann's elephant.

…長鼻類ゾウ科の1属。化石ゾウの1グループで，1924年に松本彦七郎により，古代の(パライオス)，屈曲またはゆがんだ(ロクソス)，歯(オドントス)というギリシア語を合わせて命名された。模式種はインドのナルバダゾウP.namadicusである。ちなみに，アフリカゾウの属名はロクソドンタLoxodontaである。ナルバダゾウのほか，ヨーロッパのアンチクウスゾウP.antiquus，地中海地域の矮小（わいしよう）型のフォーコネリゾウP.falconeriiやマルタゾウP.meltensis，日本のナウマンゾウが含まれる。…
