Cold current - Kanryu (English spelling)
A general term for cold ocean currents that flow from polar regions toward the equator along continents. As opposed to warm currents. In the Pacific Ocean, the Alaska Current is located to the north, and its western extension becomes the Oyashio Current, which meets the Kuroshio Current off the coast of Sanriku. In the Antarctic Ocean, the Antarctic Circumpolar Current is located, which is rich in drift ice and icebergs. In the Atlantic Ocean, the Labrador Current to the north and the East Greenland Current are the main cold currents that carry large amounts of drift ice and icebergs from March to July. Cold currents are cooler and less saline than the surrounding seawater, and contain more oxygen, phosphates, silicates, etc. (→ nutrients), which allows plankton to proliferate. Examples include the Oyashio Current and the Labrador Current, and the area near the polar front where they meet the warm currents is known to be a particularly good fishing spot.
