…one of the most prominent and active social reformers of the 19th century in Britain. Known until 1851 as Lord Ashley. He became a Member of Parliament in 1826, a member of the Conservative Party, and opposed the Electoral Amendment Bill of 1832, but voted for the repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846.
