Kanmon National Highway Tunnel

...An undersea tunnel that connects Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture and Moji District, Kitakyushu City, passing under the seabed of the Kanmon Straits. It was the name of the first railway tunnel built for the Sanyo Main Line, but the Kanmon National Highway Tunnel for roads and the Shin-Kanmon Tunnel for the Sanyo Shinkansen have also been built in the Kanmon Straits. The current Sanyo Main Line was originally built by the Sanyo Railway Company, and sea transport by the Kanmon Railway Ferry began at the same time as the full line between Kobe and Bakan (now Shimonoseki) was opened in 1901.
