Keta Shrine

Japanese: 気多神社 - けたじんじゃ
Keta Shrine

Located in Jikemachi, Hakui City, Ishikawa Prefecture. The deity worshipped is Oonamuchi-no-Mikoto. The date of foundation is unknown. It is the Ichinomiya of Noto Province, and was also called Keta Daijingu in ancient times. Oonamuchi-no-Mikoto subjugated the bandits in this region with the help of Sukunahikona-no-Kami, and it is said that the main shrine was founded when the local people worshiped it to repay his kindness. One theory is that it was during the reign of Emperor Sujin. The name "Keta Jingu" appears in a poem by Otomo no Yakamochi, the governor of Ecchu Province, in 748 (Tenpyo 20). The Shinsho Kakuchokufu records a donation of a sacred seal in 765 (Tenpyo Jingo 1), and the shrine has been highly revered throughout the imperial court, and was ranked as a Myojin Taisha under the Engi system. In 1871 (Meiji 4), it was elevated to a Kokuhei Chusha, and in 1915 (Taisho 4), it was elevated to a Kokuhei Taisha. Its auxiliary shrines include Okusha, Wakamiya Shrine, and Hakusan Shrine, and it also has many subordinate shrines. Its annual festival is on April 3rd, also known as the Oizumi Festival, and features a shooting event. Other famous special rituals include the Kadode Ceremony on January 11th, the Kunimuke Festival from March 18th to 23rd, the Chinka Festival on April 4th, the Onie Festival on May 1st, and the Umatsuri Festival on December 16th. In addition to the worship hall and the shrine gate, the main hall of the auxiliary shrine Wakamiya Shrine, which was rebuilt in 1569 (Eiroku 12), is an Important Cultural Property. The shrine treasures include the "Letter from the Lady Wife of Emperor Gonara" (Important Cultural Property).

The date of its founding is unknown, but its name appears in a poem written by Etchu no Kami Otomo no Yakamochi when he visited the shrine in 748 (Tenpyo 20). The worship hall is in the center of the photo. In the back stands the main hall, and to the right of that stands the main hall of the auxiliary shrine, Hakusan Shrine (both are designated as important cultural properties by the national government).
