Horse face

Japanese: 馬面 - ばめん
Horse face
A type of horse equipment that covers the horse's forehead and nose. It serves both protection and decoration. It is thought to have spread to China from horse-riding peoples such as the Scythians. It is made of leather or bronze. Very few have been excavated from ancient tombs in Japan (Otani Tomb, Wakayama Prefecture), and there are only a few horse clay figurines that seem to show how the horses were dressed. The horse masks attached to Karakura saddles from the Heian period are called Ginmen, and are made of gilded silver, and sometimes have a flower in the forehead. (→ Horse equipment )
