Houkazo - Houkazo

Japanese:
Houkazo - Houkazo

Noh piece. Fourth piece. Five-school current piece. The author is said to be Miyamasu, but the author is unknown. Makino Kojiro (Tsure), whose father was killed by Tone Nobutoshi, persuades his elder brother (Shite), who is a Buddhist priest, to disguise himself as a traveling performer and set out to defeat the enemy. When Tone (Waki) comes to visit Mishima Shrine, the two approach him with Zen riddles, which Tone likes, and wait for an opportunity to finally defeat the enemy. The focus of this Noh play is not so much on the story of revenge, but on the performing arts such as kusemai (musical dance), kakko (drum playing), and short songs that were popular in the Middle Ages, along with Zen. In particular, the short song that begins with "What a city of fascinating flowers," which is also sung in the Kyogen plays "Hanaori" and "Hana Nusubito," incorporates a popular song of the time as it is, and is also included in the "Kanginshu."
