A general term for harmless red food dyes used in food. Generally, it referred to natural food dyes such as those derived from vegetable safflower, which is a member of the Asteraceae family, or animal food dyes derived from cactus parasites, but recently the term food coloring has also come to include red food dyes made from chemical synthesis.
