Mount Yakushi

A peak in the Northern Alps in southeastern Toyama Prefecture. Compared to the steep mountain forms of Mt. Tateyama and Mt. Tsurugidake, Mt. Yakushi has a majestic yet gentle appearance. It is 2,926 meters above sea level. Most of the mountain is made of sandstone from the Mesozoic Tetori Series, and the summit is made of quartz porphyry. On the east side are the Nanryo Cirque, Central Cirque, and Kinsakudani Cirque, which have been designated as a special natural monument as the "Cirque Group of Mt. Yakushi." A small shrine on the summit enshrines Yakushi Nyorai and other deities. In the past, residents of Arimine Village on the western foot of the mountain (which was dispersed during the Taisho era due to the construction of a dam) used to climb the mountain on June 15th of the lunar calendar and offer swords to Yakushi Nyorai. There is a bus service from Arimineguchi Station on the Toyama Chiho Railway Tateyama Line to the shores of Lake Arimine, and it takes about a day to reach Tarodaira Hut near the summit.

富山県南東部にある北アルプスの一峰。立山(たてやま)や剱(つるぎ)岳の峻険(しゅんけん)な山容に比べ、雄大だが穏やかな山容を示す。標高2926メートル。山体の大部分は中生代手取(てどり)統の砂岩からなり、山頂部は石英斑(はん)岩で構成される。東側には南稜(なんりょう)カール、中央カール、金作谷(きんさくだに)カールがあり、「薬師岳の圏谷群」として特別天然記念物に指定されている。山頂の小祠(しょうし)には薬師如来(にょらい)などが祀(まつ)られている。かつては旧暦の6月15日に西麓(せいろく)の有峰(ありみね)村（大正時代にダム建設のため離散）の住民が登山し、薬師如来に剣を奉納する風習があった。富山地方鉄道立山線有峰口駅から有峰湖畔までバスの便があり、山頂近くの太郎平小屋まで約1日の行程。
