Born on February 18, 1601. Second son of Ikeda Terumasa. His mother was Tokuhime (Ryoshoin), daughter of Tokugawa Ieyasu. He was favored by Ieyasu, and in 1605, at the age of just five, he was given 280,000 koku of land in Bizen Province, becoming the first lord of Okayama Domain. As he was still a child, his half-brother Toshitaka acted as the administrator of the domain. In 1619, he was allowed to use the Matsudaira surname. In 1625, Toshitaka, who succeeded him as lord of Himeji Domain, gave him 100,000 koku of land in the three counties of Shisō, Sayo, and Ako in Harima, giving him a total of 380,000 koku.
