An enzyme secreted from the bile duct that is involved in the liver's detoxification. It stands for gamma glutamyl transpeptidase. Processed waste products from the liver are excreted into the duodenum through the bile duct (a small bile duct that branches off inside the liver). However, if the bile duct is blocked by gallstones or cancer, enzymes such as γ-GTP and waste products flow back, causing the blood concentration to rise. γ-GTP is typically elevated in people who drink large amounts of alcohol. If other liver tests (GOT, GPT) are normal and this value is high, excessive drinking is likely the cause. The standard value varies slightly depending on the testing institution, but if it is 50 IU/l or less for men and 30 IU/l or less for women, it is normal. Other possible causes of this high value include alcohol consumption, as well as acute and chronic hepatitis, drug-induced liver damage, cirrhosis, liver cancer, and biliary diseases that cause jaundice. A study published in 1997 by Professor Furuno Junnori (Public Health) of Kyushu University's School of Medicine showed that the more coffee people drank, the lower their γ-GTP levels were. The average value for people who drank 30ml or more of alcohol every day and no coffee was 45 IU/l, while those who drank 1-2 cups of coffee had a value of about 40 IU/l, those who drank 3-4 cups had a value of about 35 IU/l, and those who drank 5 or more cups had a value of about 30 IU/l. As no results were found to show a decrease in γ-GTP with other drinks containing caffeine, such as green tea or black tea, it is believed that some component of coffee is involved.
