A square in the center of Siena, a city in central Italy. It is a beautiful, gently sloping fan-shaped square located a little below the Siena Cathedral at the top of the hill, with three streets stretching out along the ridge of the hill from this square. This square is also famous as the place where the horse race of the Palio festival is held every summer. Around the square is the Palazzo Pubblico, built between the 13th and mid-14th centuries and currently used as the city hall, with the Mangia Tower rising to the left of the palace. From the top of the tower with 400 steps, you can look out over the city of Siena. In the Middle Ages, Siena was the center of art as well as Florence, the rival city of Florence, as the center of Tuscany. Around this square, remains and appearances that tell of the prosperity of that time remain. Source: Kodansha World Tourist Attractions Encyclopedia Information |
