sira (English spelling)

[The Birth of the Historical Narrative Akhbar]
In pre-Islamic Arab tradition, there were ayyam, a tribal battle tales, and anṣāb, tribal genealogies. In Medina, the ayyam developed into the maghāzī, a record of Muhammad's battles, which was then developed by Ibn Ishaq into the sīra, a biography of the Prophet. In addition to the ayyam and ansāb of each tribe, the tribesmen of the military towns passed down the feats of their ancestors in great conquests, by clan and family.
