Kanbok - Kanbok

Japanese: カンボク - かんぼく
Kanbok - Kanbok

A deciduous shrub of the Caprifoliaceae family (APG classification: Viburnum family). It grows 3-6 meters tall. The leaves are divided into three parts. The inflorescence is corymb-shaped, with the flowers on the periphery having large corollas and ornamental flowers with degenerated stamens and pistils, and a bisexual flower in the center. The cultivar in which the entire inflorescence is ornamental is called Temarikanboku and is cultivated. It flowers from May to July. The fruit is a globular berry that ripens red in August to September, but is bitter and inedible. The wood is white and strong, so it is used to make toothpicks and handles for tools. A decoction of the branches and leaves is also used as a medicine for cuts and scrapes. The meaning of liver wood is unknown. It is commonly found north of the Chubu region, and is distributed in the temperate zone of Hokkaido and Honshu, as well as in Karafuto (Sakhalin), the Kuril Islands, the Korean Peninsula, and China. The basic species, Viburnum orbiculatus, is found in Europe and Siberia, while another variety, Viburnum orbiculatus, is found in North America. In Europe and the United States, the fruit is used as jelly and the bark is used as a diuretic.
