A trading city in the northern part of the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan, at the southern foot of the Hindu Kush Mountains. Located on the upper reaches of the Kunar River, a tributary of the Kabul River, surrounded by steep cliffs, it distributes apricots and other fruits, as well as rice, wheat, and corn, which grow in the complex alluvial fan and river valley plain at the foot of the cliffs. It is also famous for handicrafts such as knife and dagger manufacturing and embroidery. The upper reaches of the valley run through the Shandur Pass to the east to Gilgit, and the Baro Gir Pass to the northeast to the Wakhan Valley, both of which were once used as transportation routes connecting the Indian subcontinent and Central Asia.
