〘Noun〙 A type of calligraphy. Used for writing theater signs, rankings, and official manuscripts. Based on the Goie-ryu style that was prevalent during the Edo period, it has distinctive opening and closing strokes, and is bold and rounded overall. It is said to have originated from the style of calligraphy used by Okazakiya Kanroku (pen name Kantei), a Goie-ryu instructor in Sakaimachi, Edo, in writing the sign for "Gohiiki Nennen Soga " at the Nakamura-za in 1779. 〘名〙 書体の一種。芝居の看板、番付、正本などを書くのに用いるもの。江戸時代に通行していた御家流をもとに、起筆・終筆に特徴をもたせ、全体として肉太で丸味を帯びる。江戸堺町の御家流指南・岡崎屋勘六(号、勘亭)が、安永八年(一七七九)、中村座の「御摂年々曾我(ごひいきねんねんそが)」の看板を書いた書体に始まるという。江戸文字。※随筆・一話一言(1779‐1820頃)補遺「中村座は仕切場勘六俳名勘亭と云世に勘亭流と称す」
