The Battle of Atsuga-Shima

Japanese: 阿津賀志山の戦 - あつかしやまのたたかい

This battle took place in the area of Atsugashiyama (now written as such) in Kunimi-cho, Fukushima Prefecture, from August 8 to 10, 1189 (Bun'ji 5). It was the fiercest battle in the so-called Oshu Conquest, which Minamoto no Yoritomo waged to defeat Fujiwara no Yasuhira of Hiraizumi, Mutsu Province. At this time, the Oshu forces built a fortress on Atsugashiyama to meet and attack the Kamakura forces, and stationed 20,000 soldiers under the command of Yasuhira's half-brother Nishikido Kunihira, while Yasuhira himself was stationed in the rear at Kokubuharamuchidate (present-day Tsutsujigaoka, Sendai City).

1189年(文治5)8月8日から10日にかけて，福島県国見町の厚樫山(現在はこう書く)一帯で行われた戦い。源頼朝が陸奥国平泉の藤原泰衡を討つために行った，いわゆる奥州征伐の中の最大の激戦。このとき奥州勢は，鎌倉勢を迎え討つために阿津賀志山に城塞を築き，泰衡の異母兄西木戸国衡（にしきどくにひら）を守将とする2万騎の軍兵を配し，泰衡自身は後方の国分原鞭楯（こくぶがはらむちだて）(現，仙台市榴岡（つつじがおか）)に陣していた。
