Botan shrimp - Botan shrimp (English spelling)

A shrimp belonging to the family Palaemonidae, order Decapoda, class Crustacea, phylum Arthropoda. An important species in the fisheries industry. A species endemic to Japan, found at depths of 300-500 meters from Tosa Bay to Uchiura Bay in Hokkaido, it is caught in large quantities from October to May of the following year using mechanical bottom trawl nets. It is a large species, over 20 cm in body length, with a deep yellow-red body and irregular red spots. The rostrum is 1.5 times the length of the cephalothorax, with 17-20 movable spines on the rear half of the upper edge and on the cephalothorax, and 7-10 immovable spines on the lower edge. The second thoracic leg is of different lengths, and the arm segments are segmented into many parts. Like other Palaemonidae, it undergoes proto-male sex change, so all large individuals are female. It carries 700-1000 eggs.

節足動物門甲殻綱十脚(じっきゃく)目タラバエビ科に属するエビ。水産業上の重要種。土佐湾から北海道の内浦湾にかけての水深300～500メートルに分布する日本固有種で、10月から翌年5月まで機船底引網で多量に漁獲される。体長20センチメートルを超える大形種で、濃い黄赤色に不規則な赤色斑(はん)がある。額角(がっかく)は頭胸甲長の1.5倍に達し、上縁の後半部と頭胸甲上に17～20本の可動棘(きょく)、下縁に7～10本の不動棘をもつ。第2胸脚は左右で長さが異なり、腕節は多数に分節する。ほかのタラバエビ類と同様に雄性先熟の性転換をするので、大形個体はすべて雌である。抱卵数は700～1000個である。
