An old town in Nishitagawa County facing the Sea of ​​Japan in western Yamagata Prefecture. The town is centered around the hot spring resort of Atsumi Onsen (a salt-containing hydrogen sulfide spring, 63-72°C), which runs along the Atsumi River and through which the Uetsu Main Line passes. Kuretsubo is home to the scenic Tateiwa and Shiotawaraishi rock formations. The area around Nezumigaseki (Nenjuseki) on the southwestern edge is a scenic spot on the Japan Coast, and also has a swimming beach. In October 2005, it was incorporated into Tsuruoka City along with Kushibiki Town, Haguro Town, Fujishima Town, and Asahi Village in Higashitagawa County. 255.40 km2 . Population: 10,646 (2003).
