Server - Umberto Saba (English spelling)

Server - Umberto Saba (English spelling)

Italian poet. His real name was Umberto Poli. His mother's side was Jewish. His parents divorced just before his birth. To support himself, he became a sailor and volunteered for the army at an early age, but after getting married, he opened a second-hand bookstore in Trieste and devoted himself to writing poetry. When the Fascist government enacted racial laws, he fled to Paris for a time, but soon returned to Italy and lived in hiding in Florence and Rome. Despite this fate, Saba wrote lyric poems about the people he met along the way, his hometown of Trieste, and various other things, as if he were writing an autobiography. His poems are never difficult to understand, and are written in simple, concise words that are steeped in sharp sensations and deep thought. His works, which were published one after another from his early poems, are collected in "Lyric Poems" (1961). His other works include History and Chronicle of the 'Lyric Poems' (1958).
