A private railway company. The Settsu Electric Railroad was established in 1899, and changed its name to the current one in the same year. The main line opened in 1905, and the company merged with the Kita-Osaka Electric Tramway in 1911. The Koshien Stadium (Hanshin Koshien Baseball Stadium) opened in 1924, and the bus business began in 1929. In 1957, the department store division was transferred to the Hanshin Department Store. In 1968, the company entered the Kobe Rapid Railway and began mutual operation with the Sanyo Electric Railway. As for its concurrent businesses, the company was involved in electricity supply business, land and housing, baseball stadiums, and department stores from 1908 onwards, and worked to improve these railways and concurrent businesses during the period of high economic growth after the war. In 2006, the company merged with Hankyu Holdings (Hankyu Corporation) and became a subsidiary of Hankyu Hanshin Holdings. The company's lines are the main line (Motomachi-Umeda), the Hanshin Namba Line, the Mukogawa Line, and the Kobe Rapid Railway (Class 2 railway). 私鉄会社。1899年摂津電気鉄道設立,同年現社名に変更。1905年本線が開業,1911年北大阪電気軌道を合併。1924年甲子園大運動場(→阪神甲子園球場)開設,1929年バス事業開始。1957年百貨店部門の営業を阪神百貨店へ譲渡。1968年神戸高速鉄道への乗り入れ,山陽電気鉄道との相互乗り入れ運転開始。兼営事業としては 1908年以来電気供給事業,土地・住宅,球場,百貨店などを早くから手がけ,戦後の高度成長期にはこれらの鉄道や兼営事業の充実に努めた。2006年阪急ホールディングス(→阪急電鉄)と経営統合し,阪急阪神ホールディングス傘下に入った。路線は本線(元町―梅田),阪神なんば線,武庫川線,神戸高速線(第2種鉄道)。
