…In 1868, he came to Japan at the request of a friend to build a soap factory in Nagasaki, and soon began researching improvements to Arita ware, and provided guidance for the ceramic industry in Kyushu. In 1871, he moved to Tokyo and taught mathematics, physics, and chemistry at the University of Tokyo's South and East campuses, while also studying the history of Japanese ceramics and crafts. In 1872, he was invited by the Austrian and Japanese governments (especially Sano Tsunetami) to become an advisor for the Vienna World's Fair, and since then he has led the Philadelphia World's Fair and Japan's first National Industrial Exposition, and created a beautiful type of ceramics that he himself called Asahi ware. He worked to pioneer the path to modern industry in Japan while keeping traditional craft techniques at the core. He also promoted physics and chemistry and its technology at the Kyoto Prefectural Medical School and the Chemical Engineering Bureau, taught applied chemistry at the University of Tokyo's Faculty of Science, provided guidance for the Analysis Division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce, and promoted ceramics-related technical education at the Tokyo Vocational School (now the Tokyo Institute of Technology), devoting the latter half of his life to the development of science, technology, and industry in Japan. … *Some of the terminology that refers to "Asahi-yaki" is listed below.
