Autologous blood transfusion - Jikoketsuyuketsu (English spelling) autotransfusion
A patient collects and stores their own blood before surgery and then transfuses it into themselves. Because the blood is not from another person, there is no risk of developing viral infections such as hepatitis or AIDS, or immune disorders such as graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) after the transfusion. This method is particularly used in non-urgent surgical procedures where the amount of blood transfusion can be predicted. There are several types of autologous blood transfusion: (1) blood is collected in advance when the patient's condition is good, stored, and then used during surgery; (2) blood that has been lost during or after surgery is collected, filtered, washed, and then returned to the patient. In 1989, a Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare committee recommended the promotion of autologous blood transfusion.
