Civil engineering and construction works involve modifying the terrain and creating the ground, as well as improving soft ground and building structures on it. These include (1) civil engineering work involving the excavation, loading and transport of soil and sand, (2) rock masonry work involving drilling holes for excavating rock, (3) foundation work such as pile driving to reinforce soft ground, (4) aggregate production to obtain structural materials such as sand, gravel and rock, (5) construction of concrete structures, (6) leveling, compaction and paving work for building earthen structures such as embankments and roads, (7) dredging work in rivers and oceans, and in a broad sense, maintenance and repair of roads, snow removal and other auxiliary work. Because of the wide variety of construction works, many types of construction machinery are in use, including dedicated machines for each task and general-purpose machines for several tasks.

　土木･建設工事は，地形を加工し地盤を造成するとともに，軟弱地盤を改良してその上に構造物を築造するものである。したがって，その中には，(1)土砂の掘削，積込みおよび運搬を行う土木作業，(2)岩盤掘削のためのせん孔を行う岩石工作業，(3)軟弱地盤を補強するための杭打作業などの基礎工事，(4)砂，砂利，岩石などの構造材料を得るための骨材製造，(5)コンクリート構造物の施工，(6)盛土や道路などの土構造物建設のための整地，締固めや舗装作業，(7)河川や海洋における浚渫作業などがあり，さらに道路の維持･補修，除雪作業やその他補助のための諸作業なども広い意味では土木･建設工事に含まれる。このように各種の工事があるため，建設機械も，それぞれの作業を専門に行う専用機，数種類の作業を行う汎用（はんよう）機など多くの種類が実用化されている。…
