Born: August 29, 1886, Toichi, Kochi [Died] November 26, 1979. Tokyo English literature and classical scholar. After graduating from the Department of English Literature at the Third High School, he graduated from the University of Tokyo in 1910. He taught English literature at Rissho University, Tokyo Woman's Christian University, and Tokyo Higher Normal School, and retired as a professor at Tohoku University in 1948. He studied English romantic poets such as P. Shelley and W. Blake, and published "The Sense of English Literature" (1935), which emphasized the issue of feeling before it was embodied in individual works. He also created a trend in Lawrence studies with "DH Lawrence: A Biography" (36), providing a new stimulus to the literary movement in the early Showa period. His "An Introduction to Literature" (22) also opened up new horizons in Japanese literary studies by tracing the origins of Eastern and Western literature.
