A medieval and early modern German monastery. It was founded in 724 by the evangelist Pirmin on the small island of Reichenau in Lake Constance in southwestern Germany, and he became its first abbot. Charles Martel also supported its construction with a large donation, hoping to use it as a base for the penetration of Frankish power into the lands of the Alamannenes. From the end of the 8th century, its ties with the Carolingian monastery strengthened again, and it reached its peak in the 9th century as an imperial monastery of the Benedictine Order. With a co-residence of 80 to 120 monks, it held a leading position in monastic life alongside the nearby Abbey of St. Gall, and its "Roster of the Brothers of Prayer" lists the names of over 150 monasteries in covenant with it and nearly 40,000 monks, clergy, and laypeople.
