1825‐1917 A modern Indian politician. Born in Bombay to a Zoroastrian priest. After working as a teacher, he began his business career in London in 1855. He studied the economics of British rule and determined that the cause of poverty in India was the "drainage of wealth." He helped found the Indian National Congress in 1885 and served as its speaker in 1886, 1993, and 1906. He was instrumental in the adoption of the Swaraj Resolution, which advocated Indian independence. He was the first Indian member of the British House of Commons from 1892 to 1895.
