The ancestor of the Edomites. The eldest son of Isaac and Rebekah. He was a twin brother of Jacob, but while his brother Jacob was a gentle man who lived in tents, Esau was a hunter and a man of the fields (Genesis 25:27). Esau, who was hungry, gave up his birthright in exchange for food (Genesis 25:29-34), and Jacob, disguised as Esau, took away the blessing of succession given to him by his father Isaac (Genesis 27).
